ABSTRACT
An analytical observational study of cases and controls was carried out in the health area “28 de Septiembre” (“September 28”) in Santiago de Cuba during January-April 2011, including 40 individuals diagnosed as being paranoid schizophrenic. All of them were registered in the Psychiatry service and were selected by sex using a stratified random sampling. A total of 80 normal individuals as controls were also selected, in order to determine the possible environmental and genetic factors that might have influenced on the onset of the disease. The Ξ square test with a significance level equal to 0,05, was applied, calculating the odds ratio and the confidence interval. The marital status single turned out to be significant at the onset of the disorder and in three fourths of the cases some stressing event had taken place triggering said onset. An association of familial antecedents of the disorder was found for the cases, registering a larger number of first degree relatives affected in both groups, although it was more significant for the cases. It is recommended to work on the modification of known socio-environmental risk factors from the primary healthcare level, for those patients having genetic predisposition to the disorder.
