ABSTRACT

The state of child-mother nutrition in the counties of the province of Camagüey is described, according with the results obtained by means of the Child-Mother Nutritional Surveillance System at the end of the 2011 year. The behaviour of the prevalence of the different forms of malnutrition (by defect/by excess) in children younger than 5 years wad assessed. The low weight of the woman at the beginning of pregnancy, and the low birthweight were also assessed. A reduction in the prevalence of the forms of malnutrition in children younger than 5 years was observed. Low estimates of low weight at the beginning of pregnancy and low birth weight were also found. However, an increase in the province´s infant mortality rate was observed (for every 1,000 live births): Year 2010: 4.5 vs. Year 2011: 5.6 (Δ = -1.1). Minas county presented the highest estimates of infant mortality and malnutrition by defect in children younger than 5 years. On the other hand, Sierra de Cubitas county showed the most unfavourable behaviour of women´s low weight at the beginning of pregnancy, and of children´s low birth weight. Counties with reduced case registries among risk groups were identified, thus pointing to a faulty registry of nutritional surveillance primary data. The Nutritional Surveillance System constitutes an important tool in the follow-up of child-mother nutrition in the province of Camagüey. Increasing the quality of the actors in the First Level of Health Care in the conduction of the tasks prescribed by the Surveillance System, augmenting the training of health personnel involved, promoting intersectoriality in the work of departments, groups and entities related with child-mother care in the province, and encouraging research in these areas are recommended, all of them to ensure the best nutritional status and of health of the population living in the province of Camagüey.
