Leptospirosis in children living in Cuba

ABSTRACT

Objective. To describe the epidemiological particularities of leptospirosis in children, in the Country of Ciego de Ávila, Cuba.
Material and methods. From 1980 to 2003, 280 cases of leptospirosis were registered in children below 14 years age, in a total of 2,061 cases. In this paper it is reported the frequency seen in regard of variables as age, sex, infection source, fatality case, diagnostic of presumption (before the confirmation).
Results. Children from 10 to 14 years age and boys had the higher frequency of the disease. The fatality case in children was lower than in adults. The principal source of infection it was to take a bath in natural sources of fresh water. The presumptive diagnoses, before the confirmation of leptospirosis wee: leptospirosis, acute feverish syndrome and meningoencephalitis. The confirmation was made by microagglutination and hemoagglutination.
Conclusions. Even the fatality case in children was low, it is a public health problem in children of Ciego de Ávila.
