Frequency of odontogenic neoplasms in pediatric patients at the Hospital General Centro Médico Nacional «La Raza» (from January 2008 to June 2013)

ABSTRACT
Objectives: To determine the frequency of odontogenic neoplasms, identify the gender, age and the site more frequent in pediatric patients during the period of January 2008 to June 2013.
Material and methods: Descriptive, retrospective and observational study in Hospital General of the Medical Centre National «La Raza» during the period of January 2008 to June 2013, which includes the review of records clinics and records histopathological of odontogenic neoplasms of patients who came it the Service of Pediatric Maxillofacial Surgery; identifying its location, predilection for age and sex, using descriptive statistics JMP for analysis (statistics software).
Results: Reviewed 87 tumors in the maxillofacial region, of which 57 were odontogenic neoplasms (65.5%), 25 tumors odontogenic keratocystic (44%), 19 ameloblastomas (33%), inside of these found 11 (19%), ameloblastomas multicyst 8 (14%) ameloblastomas unicyst, odontogenic myxomas 8 (14%), odontomas 3 (5%). The genre with greater predilection was female 30 (53%) cases compared with the male 27 (47%) cases, the anatomical site most affected was the jaw with a frequency of 47 cases (82%).
Conclusions: This study shows the frequency of the different types of odontogenic neoplasms in the pediatric population of Hospital General of The Medical Centre National «La Raza» during the period of January 2008 to June 2013, where the largest number of reported cases correspond to lesions of large size and benign nature, but of aggressive behavior. So it is important to assert that it must be diagnosis, stories clinical records, reports histopathological and imaging in pediatric patients who present injuries in the in the maxillofacial region with the aim of providing appropriate treatment.
