ABSTRACT

Objective: to identify the main risk factors of disability in pediatric age patients with congenital cardiopathies that should be taken into account during the course of a rahabilitating intervention.
Method: a longitudinal descriptive study which was applied to 719 patients with congenital cardiopathies who required rehabilitating intervention was performed. The presence of chronic diseases associated to other congenital defects and their possible association to genetic diagnoses as well as the impairment of functions and structures according to the International Classification of Disability were determined. The presence of general, cardiovascular sequelae and postsurgical waste in addition to the patients' nutritional state were assessed. The χ2 test was used in order to look for the association between variables.
Results: the congenital non-cyanotic cardiopathies were the most frequent in 514 patients representing a 71,5 %. A total of 109 patients (15,1 %) presented associated diseases with a predominance of the respiratory and neurological ones; in 74 patients (10,3 %) a genetic syndrome was diagnosed. 533 patients (74,1 %) with impairment of functions and or structures with a predominance of the mental functions were reported. The general sequelae presented in the 30,4 % (209 patients) with predominance of the musculoskeletal and neurologic system. From the whole operated patients with cardiopathies, 217 presented sequelae and postoperative residuals from the cardiovascular system. The nutritional state was predominant over the normal weight.
Conclusions: pediatric age patients with congenital cardiopathies present associated risk factors of disability that add a challenge to the rehabilitating treatment.
