ABSTRACT

The brain vascular accidents are the leading cause of disability in adults and affect the quality of life of patients as well as that of their families, are presented in much of the world's population affecting both sexes, with high frequently in consultations, being subject to care and treatment in rehabilitation centers. A descriptive and retrospective longitudinal study was conducted to assess the behavior of risk factors in patients diagnosed with stroke, admitted to the National Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre Julio Diaz. In Boyeros municipality of the province’s Havana, in the period of May 2012 to December 2012. The universe consisted of viewed in consulting service classification in brain injury patients who had not received rehabilitation treatment with a rehabilitation period of 8 weeks. In the sample of 94 patients of both sexes, the variables studied were age, sex, skin color, marital status, occupation, educational level, substance abuse, Pathologic Personal Background. The following functional scales were applied: Barthel index to assess the degree of disability and mental examination was made with the aim of identifying the existence of dementia. These assessments were performed before and after a period of 8 weeks duration of treatment with a program of physical therapy and rehabilitation has elapsed.
