ABSTRACT

Introduction: Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women and its treatment is multidisciplinary: local and systemic. The most important aspect of the cancer management is locoregional surgery. The morbidity of lymphadenectomy affects about 80% of patients with dissections level I and II of Berg. Objective: We studied the impact of the surgical patch Tachosil in reducing the volume and permanence of postoperative axillary drainage, hospital stay, and seroma formation. Material and methods: We analyzed 20 patients undergoing lymphadenectomy at the Hospital de La Princesa from February 2008 to February 2009. In these patients, we used Tachosil patch as a hemostatic and an agent for sealing capillaries and lymph. Results: The overall average hospital stay: 7.75 days, axillary drainage debit: 300.35 cm3 on average, and the axillary drainage duration was the same as the time of hospital stay. Complications: seroma, 5 (25%); surgical wound infection, 2 (10%); allergic reaction, 1 (5%). Conclusion: There are very few reports in the literature on the use of Tachosil in breast cancer. In our study, we did not observe an important decrease in the axillary drainage; therefore ,we recommend conducting a prospective study with a larger and more homogeneous sample.
