ABSTRACT

A descriptive and cross sectional study of 85 patients with hypertension, belonging to Caop neighbourhood of the Angolan municipality of Viana, Luanda, was carried out from April to August, 2012, in order to characterize them from the social cultural clinical and epidemiological points of view. The age groups 39-48 and 49-58 years (29.4%, respectively), as well as the female sex (80.0%) prevailed in the case material. There was unemployment and the immigration among the residents, who adopted lifestyles which could attempt against the good prognosis of the disease in some cases, among which there were: excessive intake of salt, absence of physical exercises and sustained psychoemocional tensions; however, the smoking habit and the alcohol consumption didn't constitute risk factors for the development of this disorder. It was recommended to evaluate the association grade between the identified risky conditions and hypertension.
