Clinical-epidemiological and microbiological characterization of mild burn patient with local infection

ABSTRACT

A descriptive, longitudinal, retrospective study was conducted from January 2007 to December 2012 in the Burns Unit of "Arnaldo Milian Castro" Surgical and Clinical Hospital of the City of Santa Clara, Villa Clara Province, aiming to characterize the clinical aspects –epidemiologic of local sepsis in patients with minor burns. There were treated at the Burn Service 978 patients: 378 required hospitalization, and of these, 131 were classified as minor burns. The variables used were age, sex, risk factors and dependent on patient and the microorganisms isolated. The patients studied were mainly in the group of 30-59 years Males predominated, especially in the age group between 40 and 49 years age groups with the highest prevalence of females were of 30-39 and 40-49 years. In general, among patients with positive isolation, the gender distribution was similar: male (49.6%) and female (50.3%). The number of isolates accounted represented 57.2% of the samples taken and predominated in ages between 40 and 49 years. Of the risk factors found smoking predominated (22.9%) and older than 60 years (16%). The more isolated microorganisms were Staphylococcus aureus (23.6%) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (14.5%).
