ABSTRACT
The peripheral variant of desmoplastic ameloblastoma is regarded as rare, with in fact only three cases recorded in the literature. In 2005, the World Health Organization (WHO) classified this particular variant within the group of benign tumors under the category of odontogenic epithelial tumors with mature, fibrous stroma without odontogenic ectomesenchyme. We report the case of an 85-year-old male patient with an asymptomatic localized gingival growth on the inner right-hand side of the mandible, which developed slowly over a period of five years. An incisional biopsy was performed followed by surgical excision, with a final diagnosis of peripheral desmoplastic ameloblastoma. Immunohistochemistry was performed and the condition was monitored over a period of three years, during which time there was no recurrence.
