A propos of a massive assistance to patients burned in an accident occurred at a gas station in Santiago de Cuba

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Burn injuries are the most serious and tremendous trauma that could have a human being.
Objective: To characterize the epidemiological, clinic and therapeutic evolution of the victims burned in afire of a gas station.
Method: A cross-sectional study in the Burns Service of the General Hospital: Dr. Juan Bruno Zayas in Santiago de Cuba was performed to describe the epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic data of the patients burned in a fire occurred at a gas station in 2012. 32 patients were treated.
Results: Male patients between 15 and 34 years old were predominant, the least serious, severe and very severe as well as critics patients were discharged in two weeks with a hundred percent survival. Higher length of stay due of multiple procedures performed corresponded to the extreme critics, and critics. Seven patients categorized as extremely critic died, mainly due to generalized infection and all after 72 hours. A 36.3% survival was achieved in extremely critically ill patients based on an individualized medical-surgical treatment according to their prognosis for survival in the shortest time expected. The most frequent complications were acid-base and water disorders, local and generalized infection and acute anemia but infectious complications remain the leading cause of death in almost all of the deceased. Patients who needed surgery were operated in the first two weeks, being xenograft and necrectomy the more frequent interventions.
Conclusions: A very high survival rate was achieved with the simultaneous use of nutrition, mechanical ventilation, physiotherapy, psychological and natural and traditional medicine.
