ABSTRACT

Cervicofacial actinomycosis is a chronic condition characterized by abscesses, fistulas and fibrosis. It often simulates malignancies and granulomatous disease, and should be considered in the differential diagnosis of soft tissue swellings of the head and neck. Characteristic lesions develop slowly over weeks or months and adhere to the overlying skin, giving it a bluish or reddish tinge due to venous congestion.
This paper describes a 33 year-old female presenting with a dermatosis of the neck, consisting of a tumor-like erythematous plaque, with ulcers and some fistulas, that later spread to her upper back causing total occlusion of the left jugular vein.
