ABSTRACT

Objective: To establish the degree of knowledge of dentists about their profession to prevent and contain the HIV infection during their professional activities; so as their eventual attitude toward HIV+ patients. Methodology: A self applying test based on confidentiality and brevity to alowe as many truthful answers as possible was designed and carried out. Sample was calculated with 95% confidence and 5% precision, it included dentist, both students and academic personnel from de National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). Results: 250 tests were applied to 9.1 years experience average professionals (students non included), of which 16% had attended HIV+ or AIDS patients, with an average of 4.0 sessions, each. Knowledge for the control and containment of this infection is adequate in the 49.6% of the cases. Of those tested, 12.8% indicated with precision the mode of transmission of the diseases, 35.8% knew the indications for sterilization of the instruments, 2.8% knew the actions that should be taken in case of accident in their professional exercise and 35.6% knew the Mexican Official Norm for the prevention and control of the HIV/AIDS disease. Conclusion: The majority of dentists is nor prepared for the control of infection and attention of these patients in their professional practice. Recommendations: It is imperative to diffuse, the Mexican Official Norm in the dental community because their insufficient knowledge can margin them from the scientific advancements and expose them (and their patients) to bigger risk.
