ABSTRACT

Introduction: the aging process is a relevant event for every health system worldwide due to the population transition. Cuba is not exempted from these realities, so the quality of life of the old people is an issue of great significance.
Objective: to characterize the quality of life perceived in the old people living in the home for the elderly located in Cruces municipality.
Methods: an observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out in the period of February 2012 through February 2013. The universe of study was 28 old persons who lived in the home for the elderly in Cruces municipality. The data was gathered with M.G.H Scale and the use of statistical techniques.
Results: the elderly generally perceived that their quality of life was low regardless of the sociodemographic variables (age, sex and schooling). The dimension with lowest results was satisfaction with life, followed by the socioeconomic dimension. Eighty two percent of the old persons believed that their quality of life is not satisfactory.
Conclusions: almost all the old people in this study perceived low quality of life due to the predominance of unpleasant feeling and poor links to or bad quality of their family relationships.
