ABSTRACT

Dermoscopy, or dermatoscopy (epiluminescence or incidentlight microscopy), is a noninvasive technique in which oil immersion and optical magnification make the epidermis translucent and allow the visualization of structures invisible to the naked eye. The use of this technique has been proposed as a means for distinguishing melanocytic from nonmelanocytic lesions, and furthermore it enhances the diagnostic accuracy for detecting malignant melanocytic lesions.
