ABSTRACT

Rhabdomyolysis is a syndrome characterized by skeletal muscle necrosis and its release into the bloodstream and its intracellular components. Its clinical expression may vary from asymptomatic to acute manifestation associated to multiorgan failure with electrolytic alterations, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and acute kidney failure. The diagnosis is based mainly on the detection of muscular enzymes and myoglobin. The acute kidney failure is one of the most important consequences of rhabdomyolysis, showed in 4-33% of cases. The etiology of the rhabdomyolysis in general is divided in traumatic and metabolic. Among the metabolic one of low-frequency is the secondary to hypophosphatemia. We present a case of a young alcoholic male presenting rhabdomyolysis secondary to acute hypophosphatemia, complicated with acute kidney damage that needed treatment with kidney replacement therapy having a good evolution.
