ABSTRACT

Background: The dysmorphic disorder is a mental distortion of the body imagen and conviction of the presence of unreal deffects.
Objective: To obtain the prevalence of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) in medical students at the Aguascalientes Autonomous University (Universidad Autonoma de Aguascalientes (UAA).
Metodology: An observational, transversal and descriptive study was performed, which included 485 medicine students from Universidad Autónoma de Aguascalientes (UAA) from January to June 2008. 328 students completed a questionnaire based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders IV (DSM-IV) —diagnostic criteria for BDD.
Results: 56% of UAA students presented BDD, mainly from 21 to 25 years (56% female). Insecurity (46%), low self-esteem (12%), and anxiety (8%) were the most frequent affective symptoms caused by their present body image. Face (24%) and abdomen (21%) trigger most concern.
Conclusions: BDD exists in a large percentage of UAA students. Further research is needed to confirm these findings and establish academic and social consequences, to offer an early treatment.
