Experience in the first year of implementation of a pain and palliative care clinic in a Regional General Hospital

ABSTRACT

Background: Chronic pain is present in 7 to 59% of the general population. The study of chronic pain has become important because of its high prevalence, and having high impact on the functionality of both individual and health systems. Objective: To report our initial experience and utility of implementing a pain clinic for the management of patients with chronic pain and the optimization of resources in our hospital in Hematology-Oncology unit. Results: We perform 5,006 actions in the group of patients who were evaluated in the first year of implementation of our pain clinic, which included the following: first time consultations: 293, subsequent consultations: 873, hospitalizations by our service: 578, hospital consultations: 116, blockades: 97, IV infusions: 367, subcutaneous infusions: 914, injections: 405, analgesia installation set: 64, palliative care: 1,218, pediatric patient care: 66, infiltrations: 15. Conclusions: There are clear benefits for the patient and savings in hospitalization costs for hospitals that have a pain clinic and palliative care unit.
