ABSTRACT

The human skin color is the result of several factors and conditions, which inter-action can modify it. The pigmentary system is located in the epidermis, the “melano-epidermic unit”, being the melanocyte the only cell with the capacity to synthesize melanin; this system is regulated by intricate mechanisms of hormonal and autocrine regulation —also keratinocytes, fibroblasts, and inflammatory cells are involved in a reactive phenomena, as in photoaging and photodamage skin.
This article reviews the main physiopathological mechanisms of human skin color, its clinical manifestations and dermatopathological findings.
