ABSTRACT

Introduction: Increase in patients infected with HIV /AIDS in Havana province, is a challenge for the entities responsible for ensuring the availability of medicines for treatment. Objectives: To characterize the consumption pattern of antiretroviral drugs used to treat patients suffering HIV/AIDS in Havana province during 2009-2013. Method: observational, descriptive, longitudinal study of use of antiretroviral drugs consumption. Data were obtained from the database of existing drugstore in the provinces since January 1, 2009 until December 31, 2013. They were grouped according to theATC /DDD classification; prices were obtained from official price list of the Ministry of Finance and Prices. Results: Consumption showed increase each year during the study. Increased consumption focused on four medications. Over 50% of consumption corresponded to nucleosides and nucleotides inhibiting reverse transcriptase. The cost for drug consumption was $34,216,331.14. Conclusions: The use of antiretrovirals in the province increased the study period at the expense of a combination therapy of two nucleoside and non-nucleoside nationally produced; being the combinations of more than two drugs orally supplied the most consumed. Cost of antiretroviral drugs increased during the period of study at expense of reverse transcriptase inhibitors, nucleosides and nucleotides.
