ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to make the dentistry community aware of canine retention and of its clinical importance. The research was a descriptive study which started on May 16th and ended on July 11th of the year 2000. We studied the patients who attend to the Technological University of Mexico and recorded sex, age, presence of radiographs and upper canine retention’s. In case the patient had upper canine retentions we recorded the position (horizontal, semi-vertical or vertical) and location (left, right or bilateral). The total sample size was of 3,920 patients, 1,291 were men and 2,629 were women, we found 134 patients with canine retention, totalling 155 upper impacted canines, because 21 of the cases were bilateral impacting. We found more retention in women, more impacted canines on the right side and more canines in the semi-vertical position. The overall prevalence was 3.41, the men’s prevalence was 2.78 and the women’s was 3.72 p > .05.
