ABSTRACT

Background: Integumentary depressions continue to challenge the esthetic reconstructive surgeon. Adjacent adipose tissue flap movements may have significant impact on surface contour abnormalities in selected cases where such tissue is available.
Objective: Utilization of adjacent adipose tissue maintained by viable vascular pedicles offers an excellent alternative source for space-filling material in depressed defects, and a representative work will be offered.
Method: This principle will be demonstrated by serial photographs, diagrams, and commentaries in a case with a deficiency in the thickness of the fat layer which was repaired by use of a fat flap being transposed to achieve increased thickness of the fat layer.
Result: Vascular pedicles virtually assure survival of the transposed flaps of fat used in filling fat-deficient space.
Conclusion: Consideration of this technique should enter the surgeon’s deliberations when contemplating esthetic reconstruction of depressed defects whenever adjacent fat can be mobilized with flap movements.
