ABSTRACT

Background: ACNE VULGARIS is a pilosebaceous unit skin disorder. The pathogenesis is multifactorial and complex. Reducing comedogenesis and sebum and inducing comedolysis are the most important targets. A new compound derived from salicylic acid, beta-lipohydroxy acid (LHA), has been used in cream in the treatment and control of comedones; however this is the first time that this compound is evaluated in a syndet bar.
Objective: To determine the efficacy and tolerability of LHA in a syndet bar in the treatment of mild to moderate comedonal acne.
Material and Methods: In this study we performed a randomized, open-label, clinical trial comparing the therapeutic effect and tolerability of a syndet bar containing LHA and a syndet bar with sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS).
Results: The efficacy of LHA to control comedones was 14.5± 3.94 v. 8.95 ± 2.91, p= 0.001, compared with SLS 13.9±± 3.82 v. 11.65 ± 3.45, p= 0.058.
Conclusions: We conclude that LHA in a cleansing bar shows an important efficacy compared to the control. It seems that LHA could be useful as monotherapy; we recommend that LHA should be useful as a part of conventional treatment however, especially topical retinoids, with a much better tolerability.
