ABSTRACT

Introduction: Osteoarthritis is an inflammatory disease that primarily affects the articular cartilage and probably has existed from the beginning of humankind.
Development: Recently, many advances have shown that provide new insights in its pathogenesis, genetics and diagnostics as well as treatment above. There has been a review of most of these aspects of the disease by some emphasis with regard to the concept of it, the importance of diagnosis by nuclear magnetic resonance and ultrasound measures and especially in the conservative treatment (supportive care, drugs and rehabilitation).
Conclusion: There are new advances in knowledge of Osteoarthritis, which allow an early diagnosis and appropriate treatment allowing a better quality of life for patients. Literature review was performed in Medline, Cochrane Library and Dynamed of Evidence Based Medicine, Health Library of Medicine® and Ebsco.
