ABSTRACT

Background: Urticaria has diverse clinical presentations and causes. It is characterized by wheals or transient edematous red spots that vary in size and shape. Based on its temporal evolution, urticaria is classified as acute (less than 6 weeks) or chronic (more than 6 weeks). It is estimated that acute urticaria occurs in 20% of the world’s population. In chronic urticaria, the specific cause is determined in no more than 30% of the cases. In chronic urticaria and thyroid disease, assuming that other causes for chronic urticaria have been eliminated, candidates for l-thyroxine treatment must have antithyroid antibodies and no other underlying medical condition in which l-thyroxine is contraindicated.
