ABSTRACT

Introduction: infectious diseases in children under 5 years constitute a health problem in countries where the present conditions favor the emergence and reemergence of them.
Objectives: to identify the health status of preschoolers from the urban area of Chindas municipality, Santa Barbara, Honduras, before and after an intervention strategy.
Method: a descriptive, prospective and longitudinal study was conducted from September 2007 through July 30th, 2008, in the urban area of Chindas municipality, Santa Barbara Department, Honduras. The sample consisted of 106 patients between 4 and 5 years residents in this locality with the presence of an infectious disease. The parents of every child were applied an instrument to detect the knowledge they had at the beginning and end of the evaluation period. The descriptive, statistical method was used, using summary measures for qualitative variables, proportions and percentages.
Results: the intestinal parasitism was present in most of the studied preschoolers, followed in descending order by pyodermitis, acute respiratory infections, scabies, tooth decay and diarrheal diseases. After 9 months of parental involvement in health promotion activities related to infectious disease, it was observed a reduction in most of the diseases that were evaluated.
Conclusions: the development of an educational strategy to parents in the community positively influenced the health status of preschoolers.
