Behavior of nephrolithiasis in pediatric ages

ABSTRACT

Introduction: nephrolithiasis has increased significantly in recent years, it is the cause of 7 per 1000 hospitalizations in pediatric age.
Objective: to analyze the behavior of the nephrolithiasis in pediatric patients.
Method: it was conducted a prospective, descriptive, cross-sectional study with the universe of children treated at the Pediatric Nephrology Consult, of "Aleida Fernández Chardiet" General Teaching Hospital of Güines municipality, Mayabeque Province from January 2010 to January 2012 with diagnosis of nephrolithiasis. The variables studied were age, gender, family pathological antecedents, imaging studies and way of presentation, were collected in a data collection form during different follow-up consults.
Results: there was predominance of the group of 5-14 years (72.3 %) and males (73.6 %), 62.5 % of patients without family antecedents of nephrolithiasis, more than half presented abnormalities in ultrasound and 81.6% of patients debuted with macroscopic haematuria.
Conclusions: nephrolithiasis was more frequent in males in the age group 5 to 14 years, with predominance of haematuria as way of presentation, with negative family pathological antecedents and ultrasound alterations. These results allow to identify the behavior of nephrolithiasis in Pediatrics and to act on risk factors to prevent complications and improve quality of life.
