ABSTRACT

Urinary tract infections are common complications during pregnancy. Forms asymptomatic untreated can progress to pyelonephritis, which is associated with preterm birth, low birth weight and stillbirth. Pyelonephritis is the most common indication for hospitalization in pregnant women, who are initially treated with parenteral antibiotics empirically, intravenous fluids and antipyretics. Recently it has raised the possibility of dealing outpatient form especially in women with pregnancies less than 24 weeks without any other risk factor. Early diagnosis followed by prompt and adequate antibiotic therapy establishment is essential during pregnancy to avoid a commitment to maternal and fetal health.
