ABSTRACT

Background: in the last 10 years, the Epidemiological Surveillance System Abangares not report suspected cases of whooping cough or whooping cough syndrome, according to statistics from the Ministry of Health and CCSS (Abangares), there were 14 suspected cases of the infection, which caused an outbreak alarming to the public.
Methods: analyzed a total of 14 records generated by the system of local information, including: medical records, research records, laboratory tests. Defined criteria for Pertussis or whooping cough syndrome was based cough of any development time, usually 2 or more weeks, with at least one of the following symptoms: paroxysms, inspiratory noise, post-cough vomiting, apnea and cyanosis without other apparent cause.
Results: were diagnosed 14 cases of whooping cough and whooping cough syndrome with EV-01 ballot, according to the clinical manifestations of infection (symptoms and signs) was documented that 86% of such cases had paroxysmal cough, 64.2% vomiting after -cough, 36% apnea, inspiratory stridor 28.6%, 7.1% cyanosis. The cases occurred between epidemiological weeks 17 and 23 2007.
Conclusion: 92.8% of the cases were indigenous. 14.3% presented positive PCR for Bordetella pertussis, conducted by nasopharyngeal aspirate was not performed immunofluorescence or culture to be a Health. It is important to assess endemic channels of Upper Respiratory Infections and may be masking cases catarrhal stage of whooping cough that 2 to 4 weeks later we have to diagnose the patients, who already existed, resulting in an increase in transmission to the population. It is important to have high coverage in the post-delivery with acellular DPT Abangares reported as 29% cases in children under 1 year, where the vaccine was being launched in maternity centers.
