ABSTRACT

In Cuba, nosocomial sepsis is the most frequent diagnosis in neonatology services and it is considered among the first causes of death, having a negative effect in the infant mortality rate. Patients who are admitted in these services have five to ten times more risk to develop nosocomial sepsis than in other areas. An observational, descriptive, longitudinal and retrospective study was designed at the Neonatal Unit of “Mariana Grajales” Gynecobstetric Hospital in Santa Clara; it included 470 patients who had signs of sepsis. Data about the manifestation of nosocomial sepsis were gathered from the study made from 2005 to 2009. During this period, nosocomial sepsis rate in neonates showed a decreasing tendency; however, this study didn’t throw up the expected results.
