ABSTRACT

Creating a culture of respect is essential for a health care organization to become a trusted institution. To create a culture of respect, it is necessary to develop effective and transparent methods that respond to episodes of disrespectful behavior. Changes must be supported by the organization leaders, who must create the conditions for changes to occur and the implementation of the policies required to make them happen. The code of ethics should be effectively disseminated and supported at the highest level of the institution. Follow-up of established rules and policies is essential. The initial steps taken to create a culture of respect in the ABC Medical Center are described, based on the institution’s traditions, prestige, previous codes, current code of ethics and the daily ordinary changes occurring in an institution of its nature. The importance of having a clear, transparent and fair method, in which the committees involved in the evaluation of any condition regarding this area of opportunity participate is highlighted.
