ABSTRACT

Candidiasis is the most frequent oral mycotic infection. Its incidence is rising due to different factors, as the use of dental prothesis.
Material and Methods: this is a prospective, descriptive and transversal study to determine the frequency of oral candidiasis in 100 total dental prothesis carriers. All patients underwent mycological and sociodemographic studies and filled in a clinical questionnaire.
Results: 20 of 100 patients (20%) presented oral candidiasis (in 18 of 20 Candida Albicans was isolated), and in 11 of 20 patients (55%) there was infestation of the prothesis. The clinical presentation was the chronic erythematous form, which was observed in 11 of 20 patients (55%). The average time of prothesis use was 13.3 years, while most of the prothesis made of acrilic, and thoot paste the most frequent substance used for cleaning them.
Conclusion: the frequency of oral candidiasis in patients with total prothesis was 20%. Despite total cleaning their prothesis once or twice daily with tooth paste and/or water, in the majority of patients there was not sufficient to prevent fungal infestation, with an important impact on the quality of life of these patients.
