ABSTRACT

Introduction: the scope of the oral anticoagulant treatment indications and the older age of patients in need of this treatment favored changes in its use and control without reducing its efficacy, so this is considered beneficial therapeutics for the elderly.
Objective: to describe the behavior of the control of oral anticoagulant treatment in the elderly population with thromboembolic venous disease.
Methods: a descriptive and analytical study of 76 patients (60 to 85 years) seen at the specialized service of the National Institute of Angiology and Vascular Surgery in two years. The level of control of anticoagulation was evaluated, the frequency of hemorrhagic events and other complications were determined.
Results: good control of the oral anticoagulant treatment was reached during the 2 year-period in younger than and over 60 years-old patients. No significant statistical difference was found when comparing the two groups. A higher index of slight hemorrhagic events was found in the study sample.
Conclusions: the control of the oral anticoagulant treatment in the older adult behaved similarly to that of the patient younger than 60 years, so the above mentioned treatment should be used in all the indications if the risk-benefit ratio is considered.
