ABSTRACT

Background. Quantification of DEMODEX density in human beings has not been done to allow us to determine a clear relationship between parasitism and disease. In AIDS patients, T lymphocytes depletion could be related with clinical manifestation of demodecidosis.
Objectives. In this paper we evaluated DEMODEX density in three different zones in the face and thorax of AIDS patients.
Methodology. In AIDS patients from a general hospital we performed a prospective, descriptive and transversal study with superficial biopsy. We also recorded associated symptoms and concomitant diseases.
Results. We studied 50 patients, 41 male and 9 female, with a mean age of 33.5 years. In 24% we found 5 or more acari/PSU. In 24 patients (48%) on the front we found acari with a mean of 3.25. On the cheeks, in 32 patients (64%) a mean of 4.1 and on the chest in 9 patientes (18%), a mean of 2.6.
Conclusions. We did not find a relation between HIV infection severity and quantification of DEMODEX.
