ABSTRACT

Introduction. In Mexico there isn’t enough updated information concerning Dentistry Professionals that indicates a broad panorama of the trade´s situation. The purpose of the study is to offer a first approach to a wider and more precise vision of the situation of dentists in Mexico.
Material and Methods. Analysis of documented revision, longitudinal, by decades of 1970 to 2012, from the following 5 perspectives: a) professional field: licensed professionals; b) geographic role: based on INEGI (National Institute of Statistics and Geography) reports; c) workplace: dentists that work in public and private health institutions, according to data provided by the Ministry of Health and Tax Administration Services (SAT); d) academic field: enrollments, study completions and graduates according to ANUIES (National Association of Universities and Higher Education Institutions) and the Ministry of Public Education; and e) international scope: according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
Results. In 1970 a total of 10,345 licensed dentists were registered, while for 2010 there were 151,622 dentists organized in the following way: in Bachelor Studies 92.7% (140,548), in Specialties 6.5% (9,876), in Masters 0.75% (1,145), in PHD 0.035% (53). The entity with a greater number of dentists was Mexico City with 59,214 (39.05%), in contrast Baja California, Colima and Morelos that have 0 (cero), 24 (0.02%) and 48 (0.03%) dentists. In 1990 there were 25, 965 male dentists registered (44.5%) and 32,383 female (55.5%). In 1990, 4,267 dentists worked in public institutions, number that increased to 8,707 in 2010; in 2012 there were 64,408 dental clinics registered before the SAT. From the Bachelor´s Degree there are 9 different classifications: 75.24% are graduated as dental surgeon; others are: dentistry, stomatology, medical doctor and dentist, dental military surgeon. In 2000, in the WHO there were 78,281 dentists registered, reaching a density of 8:10,000 inhabitants.
Conclusions. This panorama allows us to have a broader and more precise perspective of the professional situation of the field in our country, for the development of strategies designed for the resolution of needs regarding Dental Health in our population.
