A healthy pregnancy with proper nutrition is essential for a good birth weight while pregnant with disorders can cause delays in the growth of enduring child throughout life. The objective of this study is to provide tables showing the effects of fetal malnutrition on physical growth reflected in the weight and height from birth to adulthood manifest.
Methods: a longitudinal clinical study was conducted in a purposive sample of 83 children, 38 low birth weight and 45 with adequate growth, which served as a control group selected from births occurred at "Mariana Grajales” University Gynecoobstetric Hospital of Santa Clara in the first quarter of 1987 and had been assessed at birth, at three and six months, at a year, at eight, at 15 and at 20 years old.
Results: growth was characterized by variable weight and height by groups and genders. They were compared to the percentiles of the Cuban population. It turned out that the members of the control group remained near the percentile 90, while fetal malnourished were below 50% in weight and 10% in size.
