ABSTRACT
Bruxism is a topic of interest to doctors, dentists, and psychologist alike and one that poses a number of unanswered questions. In dentistry, there are a number of yet-to-be-filled voids in terms of diagnosis, all of which directly impact upon the efficacy of treatment and its overall management.
Material and methods: A search of the EBSCOHOST (www.web.a.ebscohost.com) database was performed using keywords such as «clinical characteristics of bruxism» with the following inclusion criteria: full-text articles, literature review, published since 2005, in adult, in humans.
Results: The search yielded 305 articles, 31 of which were selected based on the quality of their content and their relevance to the topic of the present article.
Conclusions: Sleep bruxism (SB) is a complex and multifactorial disorder. Today’s dentists need to employ a range of diagnostic methods in order to identify the underlying etiology of each SB sufferer. Finding a quality treatment will require a inter and multidisciplinary approach.
