ABSTRACT

Bacterial resistance is a global problem that has increased in recent years and due to the use of beta-lactam antibiotics as -a families most used and, within it, the carbapenems-, which have increased their use in multidrug enterobacteria. Meropenem resistance in Enterobacteriaceae is still behaves relatively low; however, it is important to keep a constant watch on this phenomenon by bringing therapeutic limitations because phenotypic resistance to carbapenems often comes coupled with the production of carbapenemases, enzymes that hydrolyze penicillins, cephalosporins, carbapenems and monobactams and pose a great threat for the clinical utility of all beta-lactams. Until December 2013 had not been informed resistant Enterobacteriaceae to carbapenems in the Microbiology Laboratory of "Mariana Grajales" Gynecoobstetric Hospital of Santa Clara City, Villa Clara Province, until a strain of Klebsiella pneumoniae were isolated and one of Escherichia coli, suggesting phenotypic resistance to carbapenems of these microorganisms.
