ABSTRACT

The use of bioprosthesis in the hernia surgery is an irrefutable reality, because the benefits are undeniable. Nevertheless, it is necessary that surgeons have a correct knowledge of them, in general, and of their characteristics, particularly, in order to apply scientifically and ethically each of the implant that there are in the international market. In this work the current and necessary concepts in this surgery are established; also, the origins, complications, adverse reactions, the ways of solving complications and the present time in the bioprosthesis industry are exposed. The indicated topics allow a characteristic updated knowledge of the main characteristics and the uses of meshes in the hernia surgery, what can be of great usefulness for the general surgeon, specialized or not in the topic.
