ABSTRACT

Introduction: Omphalitis is an infection of the umbilical stump. It typically presents as a superficial cellulitis. It is predominantly a disease of the newborn and signs of localized infection include periumbilical erythema, edema, tenderness and absence or presence of pus.
Case Report: We report a case history of a newborn 2 days old having an early onset omphalitis and quickly complicated with necrotizing fasciitis and severe sepsis. Despite treatment with antibiotics and supportive care died by septic shock and multiple organ failure.
Conclusion: Outcome is usually favorable in newborn with uncomplicated omphalitis. However the mortality rate is significantly higher after the development of necrotizing fasciitis, myonecrosis and early onset sepsis.
