ABSTRACT

Infection with Toxocara sp larvae may occur in children and can cause a serious systemic illnes known as visceral larva migrans. Eosinophilic pneumonia also occurs in children and is frequently associated with systemic disease. Hyperleukocytosis, eosinophilia and Toxocara serology using an enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to detect antibodies is helpful. We expose a case of an 2.5 years old boy with eosinophilic pneumonia by Toxocara sp. Diagnosis of visceral larva migrans, was suspected by clinical findings (geophagism, fever, cough, polypnoea, hepatomegaly, dermic lesions, lung infiltrates and hyperleukocytosis with eosinophilia) and confirmed by ELISA. The patient was treated with albendazol and steroids. Therapy was, administered with satisfactory evolution. We suggest that part of the diagnostic approach in cases of visceral larva migrans should include antecedents of intense geophagism, clinical manifestations, ELISA, radiodiagnosis and ophtalmoscopy.
