ABSTRACT

Introduction: cutaneous cancer is considered by experts as an epidemic, it constitutes one of the most common chronic pathologies in the world, with recognized influence of environmental, genetic, infectious and social factors.
Objective: to evaluate the usefulness of photoeducation for family caregivers of children and adolescents at risk of cutaneous cancer.
Methods: the National Commission for Xeroderma Pigmentosum developed an educational intervention strategy for five years, for family caregivers of Cuban children and adolescents at high risk of cutaneous cancer. An assessment of the habits and knowledge of the intervened population was performed by conducting surveys, compared with a control group.
Results: the participant carer group in the summer school and the control group presented similar homogeneous characteristics, but participants in the educational intervention had better knowledge and habits related to photoprotection. Most caregivers believe that summer school has always influenced their personal conduct and knowledge acquired are useful to perform the care of their families at high risk of cutaneous cancer.
Conclusion: the study allowed to conclude that the photoeducation is a valid instrument for the incorporation of knowledge and positive habits in caregivers, and facilitates the management of patients in their care.
