ABSTRACT

Introduction: in spite of the generational succession and of important breakups with male chauvinistic moralism. There is still a stereotyped perception of homosexuality based on prejudices, tabooes and erroneous beliefs.
Objectives: to determine the social perception of homosexuality in a group of future health care professionals that study in Güines municipality, Mayabeque province.
Methods: an observationalit, descriptive, cross-sectional study with qualitative methodological approach, was performed between the months of January to March 2011. The authors worked with an intentional sample constituted by 36 future health care professionals who were studying the fifth year of the Stomatology specialty, Nursing, Medicine and Psychology in Güines municipality, Mayabeque province. The semistructured interview and free listings were used for collecting the information and analysis of content for the processing.
Results: it was obtained that the 100 % of the sample identified and reduced homosexuality to the masculine homosexual. The consideration of the homosexuality from criteria of perversion, difference and abnormality prevailed in 55.5 % of the subjects, although 44.4 % expressed that it constitutes a normal sexual orientation. They described homosexuals from behaviors, practice, external characteristics, attributes and values, standing out the negative aspects. The 100 % of the subjects recognized that it exists rejection to homosexuality and of them (97,2 %) referred that it is justified and deserved by the unsuitable behaviors that homosexuals assume.
Conclusions: the subjects studied presented a stereotyped perception of homosexuality based in prejudices, taboos and erroneous beliefs.
