Risk factors associated to the apparition of subprosthesis stomatitis

ABSTRACT

Introduction: subprosthesis stomatitis is the most frequent alteration in the patients rehabilitated with prosthesis.Its multifactorial etiology is inappropriately managed since not all of its risk factors are evaluated.
Objective: to determine if there is any association between the subprosthesis stomatitis and the risk factors: type and state of prosthesis, time and form of use of the same, as well as the buccal hygiene.
Methods: observational, analytical, transversal and prospective study from January to December 2012, performed at “Andrés Ortíz Junco” Stomatologic Clinic, Güines, Mayabeque. The population object of study was integrated by 111 patients, over 15 years, of both sexes, with prosthesis older than two years and with symptoms or clinical signs of subprosthesis stomatitis. The information obtained of the buccal examination and the interrogation was collected in a survey.
Results: to the total and unfit prostheses correspond the greater figures with 58,56 % and 61,26 % respectively. There was predominance of 54,95 % of efficient hygiene. Near of the half of the patients (45,95 %) had devices with more than 10 years. There was predominance of patients that used it uninterruptedly (61,26 %).
Conclusions: the majority of the patients were bearers of total prostheses, unfit and older than 10 years. There was predominance of the use of the prosthesis in a discontinuous way and an efficient buccal hygiene. The time of the prostheses and the state of the same are the risk factors that behave like conditionings for the apparition of the injury.
