ABSTRACT

Objective. To facilitate the arthroscopic procedure for the ankle joint whenever a greater separation between tibia and talus is needed through the procedure. Material and methods. From January 1998 through January 2001, 20 adult patients, male and women, were submitted to arthroscopic examination and treatment of the ankle joint, with the help of a domestic traction, performed by the surgeon himself, as a sterile bandage is applied surrounding the patient’s ankle and the surgeon’s body, who gently moves backwards as increasing space between tibia and talus is required. Results. A maximum separation of 8 cm between tibia and talus was obtained as a result of the self-assisted traction for the arthroscopy of the ankle. Conclusion. Present is a recommended method for increasing joint space in arthroscopy of the ankle joint.
