ABSTRACT

Alternative or complementary medical therapies (CAM) are defined as a group of diverse medical and healthcare systems practices and products that are not presently considered to be part of conventional medicine [5]. This therapies are divided into two subgroups, of which nutritional therapy is part of the natural product category. Cancer patients are constantly seeking for treatments that improve their personal well being and general health. In general there are no scientific based studies that prove that their theories are in fact correct, or they are too biased to be considered valid proof. This is the reason why in conventional medicine, CAM therapies are generally censored to cancer patients. However, studies on CAM therapies have demonstrated that they give the patient hope, motivation and a sense of authority over their own health that help them cope with the disease. Gerson Therapy, Macrobiotic diet and Gonzalez regimen are three examples of how diet is being used as a treatment against cancer. The importance of the topic relies in informing ourselves and determining what aspects of the CAM therapies are able to help our patients in order to give them an integral treatment.
