ABSTRACT

Interstitial cystitis is a condition characterized by urinary symptoms (frequency, urgency, nocturia, chronic bladder pain, feeling of suprapubic pressure) over 6 weeks duration in the absence of infection or other identifiable cause. Its etiology is still unknown. It is more common in women, and has had an incidence of 2.7% - 6.5% of women in the United States, equivalent to 3.3 to 7.9 million women. In men, the incidence is much lower with only 1.3% in the United States. Diagnosis is by detailed medical history, biopsies and urodynamic studies; however this is controversial because earlier studies have described this pathology as a diagnosis of exclusion.
