Functional, cognitive and biomedical evaluation of elderly of 90 years and more

ABSTRACT

A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted in a doctor's office belonging to "Jose Ramón León Acosta" polyclinic of Santa Clara between September 2013 and January 2014 to characterize the functional, cognitive and biomedical status of 21 elderly of 90 years and more. Sociodemographic and biomedical variables were collected and independence in basic activities of daily living were evaluated from the Katz test, the implemented activities with proof of Lawton and the mental sphere with minimal mental status examination. The data were processed by descriptive statistics and represented in tables. The longevity were mostly aged between 90 and 94 years with female predominance, there was dependence for the implemented activities predominated cardiovascular diseases, prevailed mild cognitive impairment and functional status of the elderly studied was characterized by dependence in implemented activities of daily life and independence for basic activities of daily life, with a corresponding cognitive level with mild cognitive impairment.
