ABSTRACT

The word critical care was included in the medical terms at the end of 1950 at the South Carolina University. The concept emerged due to the patients who were severely wounded and had substantial survival if advanced attention was provided with objective monitoring every minute. These measures were based on real time by the use of electronic devices monitoring vital signs, hemodynamic parameters, respiratory and complementary levels of blood and corporal fluids. Advance care was increasing and a new generation of physician, nurses, therapists and pharmacologist emerged. The critical care patient, new advances in technology and monitoring fast developed. Furthermore intubation, mechanical ventilation, hemodyalisis, and volume requirements guided on intravascular measure, cardiac output and cardiopulmonary resuscitation with compressions, defibrillation and peacemaker insertion became a common practice. So far the Society of Critical Care Medicine includes physicians, nurses, pharmacologists, respiratory therapy specialists and other professionals from more than 80 countries. The leadership on critical care was established when the Society of Critical Care Medicine edited a journal entitled «Critical Care Medicine» in 1973 under the editorial leadership of Dr. William Shoemaker. From that day onwards the specialty was accepted in the medical residencies worldwide.
