ABSTRACT

Early detection of degenerative joint disease (EAD) will be increasingly more important to improve the quality of life of patients with this condition.
Objective: to characterize ultrasound EAD knee and his correspondence with imaging studies, a descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in the Julio Diaz hospital.
Method: 733 patients were studied with ultrasound knees. Qualitative data analysis was performed by descriptive and inferential statistical methods being used SPSS version 18.0. A summary and average percent as dispersion measure the standard deviation was used were employed.
Results: EAD predominantly observed in females for 71,4 %. According radiological classification 56,8 % of the knees had EAD. The main ultrasonographic findings were: joint space narrowing representing 95,7 % thinning of the articular cartilage (less than 3 mm) in 86,3 % and presence of marginal condrofitos 29,9 %.
Conclusions: Ultrasound is a useful diagnostic tool EAD.
